Microneedling

Microneedling is an effective solution to multiple skin concerns in one procedure, including textural concerns, acne scars, fine lines, hyperpigmentation, and stretch marks. It does not involve heat or chemicals and therefore reduces downtime and side effects while still being highly effective.

It is an absolute classic and staple beauty treatment for anyone looking to improve the way their skin looks and feels!

About Microneedling

Microneedling is an ancient beauty treatment that has been around since the 1900s, and it is still popularly used in skin clinics today – for good reason! This procedure can improve the appearance of acne scars, fine lines, wrinkles, stretch marks, hyperpigmentation, and completely rejuvenate the overall texture, tone, and appearance of your skin! The best part? It is minimally invasive, chemical free, and uses a natural technique. Microneedling works by creating tiny punctures in your skin, which forces your body to heal and regenerate your skin, resulting in the production of collagen and elastin. These proteins help the skin look firm, smooth, and supple. At Vitalize Skin Clinic, microneedling is performed on a Health-Canada licensed device, the TWIST by Dermaroller, which was handcrafted in Germany to the highest European medical standards by the pioneers of the microneedling procedure. Dermaroller GmbH is a German company which was the first to develop microneedling devices, and the TWIST is their newest invention – that’s how you know you’re getting the real deal!

How Microneedling Works

Creates mico-injuries to the skin
Microneedling basically works by using needles to create tiny holes or injuries to your skin – in a very controlled manner to trigger the body’s natural healing response. At Vitalize Skin Clinic, we use the TWIST by Dermaroller to perform microneedling, which uses pre-sterilized and disposable surgical-grade stainless steel needles.
The micro-injuries created to your skin from microneedling sends your body into healing mode, stimulating the production of collagen and elastin, proteins responsible for keeping the skin firm, smooth, and youthful. Did you know that we lose 1% of collagen every year once we hit our mid-20s – that’s where microneedling comes in for the rescue, gradually building collagen over the course of 4 to 6 weeks after treatment, with continued improvement several months later.
Microneedling can effectively reduce the appearance of scars, fine lines, wrinkles, pores, pigmentation, stretch marks, and even burn marks for a smoother appearance, firmer, and healthier appearance. Typically 3-6 sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart are recommended, which is when you will notice a deeper improvement in skin texture. However, you’ll even notice an immediate glow and firmness to your skin even just a couple days after treatment!
Microneedling is a minimally invasive, and chemical-free procedure with a quick recovery time of a few days to up to a week. Complications and side effects are minimized compared to more invasive methods such as lasers. The TWIST by Dermaroller device is a Health Canada approved medical-grade device which is the safest on the market.
Improving the skin is a gradual process and consistency is key to successful treatment outcomes. Following microneedling, skincare product absorption is increased by up to 300%, making it the perfect time to apply ingredients to enhance benefits to your skin. All microneedling procedures are performed with a hyaluronic acid serum At Vitalize Skin Clinic and finished with an intensive soothing hyaluronic acid sheet mask. You have the option of microneedling with growth factors, with our potent and sterile ReadyMedical solution to enhance the healing and efficacy of your procedure. In terms of aftercare instructions, you should wash your face the day after your procedure with lukewarm water, use only gentle cleansers, frequently moisturize, protect the skin with SPF 30+, and avoid irritants such as AHA/BHA’s, retinoids, exfoliants, or active ingredients for up to a week, or until your skin is fully healed. Before your procedure you should follow the same instructions of avoiding retinoids and active ingredients for a week.
The initial healing process following microneedling is expected to take up anywhere from a few days up to a week, with final results being visible 4-6 weeks after a single session. 3-6 treatments are advised, spaced 4-6 weeks apart to improve the skin texture and complexion. Collagen production will continue to enhance gradually, with benefits experienced even several months following your treatment.

Who Is This For?

Microneedling benefits anyone looking to treat:

Acne Scars

Reduces the appearance of acne scars, whether they be textured or pigmented.

Fine lines & Wrinkles

Boosts collagen and elastin production which improves the texture of the skin and minimizes fine lines and wrinkles, resulting in a smoother surface.

Hyperpigmentation

Improves the overall skin tone by reducing dark spots, exfoliating the skin of dead cells, and revealing brighter and more radiant skin underneath.

Stretch Marks & Scars

Induces collagen and elastin production, which remodels scarred skin over time, leading to an improvement in the texture and appearance of stretch marks over the course of multiple sessions.

Reduces Enlarged Pores

Tightens the skin and increases skin cell turnover, removing excess oil and debris from the pores, making them appear smaller.

Overall Skin Rejuvenation

By stimulating collagen and elastin production, microneedling rejuvenates the skin and results in a smoother, firmer, and more radiant appearance.

Microneedling involves using non-traumatic needles to create controlled damage to the skin with the goal of inducing collagen production which will allow the skin to heal correctively. When the skin heals, damaged and scarred skin achieves an improvement in texture, tone, firmness and elasticity. Thereby, resulting in healthier, smoother, and more attractive looking skin over the course of a few sessions. Additionally, microneedling promotes the absorption of active ingredients by 80% or more which will amplify results.

Microneedling works to diminish the appearance of acne scars, stretch marks, self-harm scars, pigmentation, wrinkles, fine lines, and other textural issues with the skin. It further improves the elasticity of the skin, induces collagen production, and addresses hair loss by promoting growth.

At Vitalize Skin Clinic we use surgical-grade and Health Canada approved equipment and sterilized needles with advanced safety features, specifically designed for micro-needling. Our staff was trained in this procedure by a dermatologist, manufacturers of the equipment, and accredited by the reputable, George Brown college. We are differentiated from other clinics performing microneedling with limited training or cheap equipment, as we only use medical-grade microneedling devices and skin products which do not risk causing further trauma and scarring to the skin. Additionally, we do not jeopardize the safety of our clients by using off-label serums, oils, or concoctions and stick to Health Canada approved, quality serums designed for microneedling.

Microneedling is one of the oldest, most tested, and effective treatments to treat stretch marks and scars, and can lessen their appearance or make them completely invisible. However, it is important to note that stretch marks differ from more superficial marks such as acne scars, as they are caused by ruptures and tears deep within a layer of the skin, called the dermis, therefore no treatment on the market can guarantee to completely erase their appearance. In our experience, stretch marks significantly improve in texture, appearance, and tone after a few sessions of microneedling, making them much less noticeable and bothersome for patients. Individual results may vary depending on the severity of stretch marks and the unique anatomy and healing patterns of the patient.

Microneedling is considered less invasive than traditional laser treatments, which typically involve heat, therefore the risks for side effects are minimized and healing time is quicker. Compared to laser treatment, microneedling is also significantly more cost effective and suitable for all skin types, including those prone to post inflammatory hyperpigmentation

Inkless stretch mark removal is a buzz-word for the microneedling technique, a procedure which has been around for over a century. Both microneedling and inkless stretch mark removal (ISR) involve creating controlled micro-injuries to the skin using needling techniques to induce collagen production and diminish the appearance of stretch marks and scars. We do not offer the inkless stretch mark technique at Vitalize Skin Clinic, as it is typically performed with off-label tattoo needling devices, which are significantly cheaper and thereby pose a greater risk of trauma to the skin compared to Health Canada approved micro needling devices. It is also critical to be wary of off-label skin products, oils, serums, and self-made concoctions, often used during the ISR method, as they are not Health Canada approved for use on the skin following microneedling. Another thing to be cautious of is false advertising, edited images, deceptive lighting, and unhealed hyperpigmentation which are used by deceptive practitioners to make the stretch marks appear more flattering. To judge results for accuracy, ensure the before and after photos are taken in the same lighting, are unedited, and are shown after the hyperpigmentation, which may temporarily disguise the stretch marks, fully resolves.

Typically, results will be visible as soon as the skin heals and at least 3-4 sessions are advised, depending on the skin concerns. It will take 4-6 weeks to experience full results and for collagen production to develop. After microneedling, collagen will continue to be produced for up to 2 years after treatment and your skin will continue to benefit from its effects.

Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure and therefore the potential for side effects is greatly diminished as compared to invasive laser treatments involving heat, which may be unsuitable for skin types prone to hyperpigmentation. Temporary side effects include redness, discomfort, swelling, flaking, and dryness. These side effects typically resolve within a few days.

It is not advisable for individuals with active acne, active skin infections, keloid scarring, bleeding disorders, weakened immune systems, certain illnesses which affect the skin, HIV, or those undergoing pregnancy to get microneedling.
