Frequently Asked Questions

How does laser vein removal work?
Laser vein removal targets unwanted spider veins by concentrating short pulses of light energy to pigmented blood vessels, causing them to heat up, coagulate, and gradually disappear. The collapsed blood vessel will then gradually vanish and be reabsorbed by the body. The Candela GentleMax Pro® laser device delivers a cooling pulse for comfort and safety to the surrounding tissues in between laser pulses.
During your laser vein removal treatment, you will be given safety goggles to protect your eyes from the laser light. In controlled pulses, the laser will then be used to target the unwanted veins with a small handpiece. To ensure comfort, each laser pulse is followed by a pulse of cooling spray. At the end of your treatment, a cool compress may be applied to reduce any potential swelling.

Small spider veins typically clear up immediately after treatment. However, it is not uncommon for veins to be visible for 4-6 weeks after treatment before they diminish, especially larger veins.
Laser vein removal is a noninvasive procedure with no downtime. At Vitalize Skin Clinic, this is conducted by Health Canada approved, state of the art technology. It is extremely rare that clients undergoing laser vein removal experience any permanent side effects. Temporary side effects include redness, swelling, blistering, bruising, and hyperpigmentation. The swelling and redness typically heals within a few hours.

Patients typically require 1-4 sessions for optimal results, and this varies between individuals. Many lesions clear after a single session.

Laser vein removal is a noninvasive procedure and many patients find it to be tolerable, describing the experience as akin to a rubber band snapping on the skin. The Candela Gentlemax Pro® device utilizes a cooling technology which allows the procedure to be conducted gently and comfortably.
Before treatment, ensure the skin is clear of self tanner, makeup, or moisturizer. It is advised to avoid any irritants including hydroxy acids and retinoids for a week before treatment. It is important to disclose your medical history and any prescription medications you are taking as they may have contraindications with the laser technology.

There is no downtime following the procedure, however it is advised to avoid direct sunlight, vigorous activity, and abrasive cleansers and exfoliants on the skin for the first few days after treatment. Additionally, avoid scratching the area as it may lead to scarring. It is recommended to apply a cool compress, use medical grade sunscreen during the day, keep the area clean, and apply polysporin if you experience blistering. Avoid aspirin, Advil, Fish Oil supplements and other anti-inflammatory products to prevent bruising and opt for Tylenol if needed.
